Film stars are the embodiments of dreams, their glamorous publicity images carefully crafted and controlled. There are a range of photographers involved in creating the star ‘image’ while yet others delight in exposing the reality behind the glamour. This exhibition looks at the complex world of film publicity and the photographers whose image-making talents can make or break a star’s reputation.

Portrait photographers were once a common sight wherever people gathered for leisure or pleasure. Usually ignored and frequently reviled, these itinerant photographersbecame a figure of ridicule and contempt. Despite their prolific output, they have been largely written-out of the history of photography. This exhibition redresses the balance and celebrates the work of these forgotten photographers.

A simple scrapbook, printed and mounted by Henri Cartier-Bresson, has become one of the most important photographic artefacts of the 20th century. Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson brought together all the photographs from the scrapbook, with the original cover and the remaining pages, to create a rare exhibition of vintage Cartier-Bresson works.
